The Brie, The Bullet and The Black Cat

Monday, February 16th, 2009

So to celebrate my birthday this year I wanted to incorporate the traditional fancy dress party with something a tad more ‘grown up’. The result was to host a murder mystery meal for 14 of us. We bought the box set of ‘The Brie, The Bullet and The Black Cat’ (set in wartime Cassablanca), sat and casted my friends, and sent out invites!

The party was held on Saturday 14th February (valentines day was booted out the window!) and was a great success. Here are some photos.

grandbuttes & oilycarte

Rebecca & Steve Campion as Edith and Huges Le Grandbutte. Huges is the deputy mayor of Cassablanca, Edith is his wife (though not entirely happy).

Beth came as Nicole, 18 year old daughter of the Le Grandbuttes. Rob came as Monsieur Oily-Carte, schooled in Britain, and now talent scout for the famous Moulin Bleu cabaret club in Paris.

seamus o’hack cherie boot and pierre paysanski

Jonathan as Seamus O’Hack, the Irish reporter looking for his big break. Jon’s accent wandered brilliantly throughout! Charlotte came as Cherie Boot, androgynous and husky cabaret singer from Paris.

I was Pierre Paysanski, half Russian and half French, poet and painter with a gammy leg. The ‘tache was real. Gotta love it. With the game catering for 10-12 people, and with 14 people coming, Lizzie took on the role of organiser and cook, and the character of Mimi Le Eieu-Eieu – maid at the home of the Le Grandbuttes.

otto von pinkelwurst, cherie and countess bogov

David was Otto Von Pinkelwürst, Gestapo officer, possibly mad (definitely mad if you saw David’s excellent performance!) and KT came as the glamourous Russian, Countess Bogov.

Kirk Ramson III

Steve came as Kirk Ramson III, owner of Kirks American Café. Much fist pounding on the table ensued!

bigglesworth, o’hack and otto

My brother Isaac was visiting, and as he’s an actor anyway we asked him to come up with a character to play on the night. He was Captain Tommy K Bigglesworth, parachuted into Cassablanca quite by accident, and not altogether sure what’s going on (he can’t understand the foreign accents).

More pics of Seamus O’Hack and Otto Von Pinkelwürst.

Oily-Carte and Ingrid Pith

Taken later in the evening (!). Jim came as Ingrid Pith, flirty and busty Danish art dealer. For whatever reason, he wasn’t keen on going out later dressed as Ingrid! Here he/she is flirting with Monsieur Oily-Carte.

Not sure how we fitted so many people in, but we did! Thank goodness for our open plan dining/living rooms!

murder mystery

Ok here’s the rundown. Left to right: Tommy K Bigglesworth (extra character); Pierrie Paysanski (holding the lovechild of the Black Cat, possibly); Ingrid Pith; Monsieur Oily-Carte; Nicole Le Grandbutte; Huges Le Grandbutte; Otto Von Pinkelwürst; Edith Le Grandbutte; Countess Bogov; Pia Fedora (fiesty Spanish lover of the deceased Black Cat, played by Emma!); Kirk Ramson III; Cherie Boot; Seamus O’Hack.

Well done everyone! And thank you!

Yes, I’m now officially in my late 20′s. Great. But on the plus side I had a massive chocolate/toffee/marshmallow/rice krispie ‘O’ for Owen!

All gone now though. Mmmmmmmmmmm.

Illustrated Song Titles is an initiative which I co-conceived and started in 2008. The general idea is simple: using the shuffle feature on iTunes, a song is randomly selected and the title of that song is then used as the basis for an original illustration. Participants have one month to complete their artwork and post on the website where critique and praise is offered by other participants. It’s intended as a safe, ‘just for fun’ opportunity to keep our creative juices running.

This particular entry was for the title ‘Apple Tree’ by Wolfmother.

Cup fever

Arsenal5

Well I’ve finally loaded the pictures from my camera and came across these ones from a month ago! The new year started with an eagerly awaited trip to the Emirates Stadium for the FA Cup 3rd round match between Arsenal and Plymouth Argyle.

We had a great day out visiting a, frankly phenomenal, new stadium with just under 9,000 other Argyle fans, despite the disappointing result. I know, we held out very little hope of beating Arsenal but I was still disappointed with the way we failed to really get at them and test their defence. Never mind, as I say, a great day out with the Green Army! Also it means we can now focus on the league…!

Here’s me with my dad at Farncombe station, bright and early! And the outside view of the impressive Emirates.

The whole gang: Dad, me, Darren, Chris, Rob, David.

“No Daz, I really think we could beat them…”. Owen’s optimism meets a hilarious reaction.

Baby boom!

Monday, February 2nd, 2009

Wow. If 2007 was the year of the weddings (we went to a good 9 or ten I think, including our own), and then 2008 was the year of the babies!!

First I should say ‘Hi’ and ‘Happy New Year’ to y’all as I seem to have neglected to post anything on here for well over a month! Lizzie and I had a great Christmas and New Year and life in 2009 has been good so far.

Over the Christmas period lots of our friends had babies and here are some pictures of them (clockwise from top left): Me with Annabelle Coffey; Lizzie and I with Hannah Poole; Tim, Debra and Heidi Searle; Steve, Rebecca and Noah Campion. Lots of fun, especially for us as we can play with them, remark on their cuteness and then leave them with their parents when they start to cry and poo! Winners!

babies

Just to clarify, these are NOT our babies and we have no plans to have any yet so don’t ask or nudge each other!
